Thanks for the letter and thinks that in every line, she read the sincere devotion to humanity of the true poet; discusses the interview in the "Tribune" he had sent her; at the end of her letter she tells Markham that today is her eighteen birthday.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
